Irrigation Restoration and Development Project

Improves rural livelihoods through rehabilitation of irrigation facilities in the Pashtun Zarghun District of Herat province (Canal structure rehabilitation)

ACTIVITY SUMMARYThis is an ongoing WB funded Irrigation Restoration and Development Project (IRDP).  It is the follow up phase of the previous Emergency Irrigation Rehabilitation Project (EIRP) which was operational from June 2004 to December 2011. It is a national project implemented all over the country.  IRDP  is mostly focused on the rehabilitation of existing medium and large irrigation schemes such as design and construction of conveyance and other hydraulic structures.  About 22 small dams were investigated and studied leading to construction of about 2 dams (less than 20 m height) if found feasible, and establishment of additional hydro-metrological networks and hydrological services in the country. It also involves capacity development of both MEW professionals and farming community.
